Erectile Dysfunction Treatment Without Medication: 4 Non-Drug Options Explained

What is a vacuum erection device?

A vacuum erection device (VED) is a drug-free, non-invasive option for managing erectile dysfunction. Sometimes informally called a penis pump or erection pump, a VED uses negative pressure around the penis. This may increase blood flow into the erectile tissue and help produce an erection.

A compatible constriction ring may then be used temporarily to help maintain the erection after the cylinder is removed.

1. Active³® Erection System: electric vacuum therapy

The Active³® Erection System is an electrically operated vacuum erection device for the management of erectile dysfunction.

The electric pump generates negative pressure inside the cylinder and may help produce an erection. A compatible constriction ring can then be used to help maintain it.

2. Manual Erection System: manual vacuum therapy

The Manual Erection System works according to the same vacuum principle as the Active³®, but the negative pressure is generated manually using a lever-operated pump. 

It does not require a battery or charging and gives the user direct manual control over vacuum generation.

What is the role of a constriction ring?

A constriction ring is used with a compatible vacuum erection device when then aim is to maintain an erection for sexual activity.
After an erection has been achieved, the ring is transferred to the base of the penis. It temporarily reduces blood outflow and helps maintain the erection after the cylinder is removed. 
Medintim constriction rings are intended for use with compatible Medintim vacuum erection systems, including the Active³® and Manual Erection System.

Important: A constriction ring must not be worn for more than 30 minutes.

3. Rehabi PVT®: penile vacuum training

Not every vacuum device has the same purpose. Rehabi PVT® is a manual penile vacuum trainer intended for erectile-tissue training, including following prostatectomy.

The device creates negative pressure around the penis and draws blood into the erectile tissue. Its primary purpose is therefore different from that of a vacuum erection aid used to help achieve an erection for sexual activity.

4. Backup Ring: additional erection support

The Backup Ring works differently from the constriction rings used with vacuum erection devices. It is a flexible, one-size-fits-all ring designed to support an existing erection and improve firmness and fullness.

The Backup Ring is positioned behind the testicles, between the testicles and the body, where it supports and stabilises the penis and testicles.
